This came up yesterday on S2kI. Driver survived and recovered enough to post the video. Warning: includes crash and audio of the guy groaning with a broken neck and back.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:42 |

I can’t believe how calm he was as he was headed for the ditch.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:43 |

wow, this is a weird crash. doesnt look like he was doing anything too out of the ordinary. No spike in revs or hard braking before it rotates.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:43 |

Panic-shocked, I’m guessing
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:44 |

One of the YouTube commenters claims he saw something in the road. I haven’t gone back to scrutinize yet. I agree it looks weird.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:46 |

If you watch his speedo he went from 80-70 right as he went into the corner. I think he ended up breaking too much while turning and just stuffed it. Also he never tried to recover from the skid and steered way to straight, lack off oppo lead to serious owch factor.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:46 |

And that’s why I don’t believe in convertibles. I don’t like the idea of using my head as a roll bar.
A 41 mph crash shouldn’t kill you but this guy is lucky to be alive
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:46 |
|
He wasn’t calm he was frozen. He has absolutely no ability to save himself and his brain just locked in horror.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:48 |
|
The audio is very ahead of the video. Very unnerving to hear him cry and moan way before the crash
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:49 |
|
Really? Driving 70mph around a downhill turn isn’t anything out of the ordinary? He came in too hot, lost traction, and wrecked it. This guy’s an asshole.
ETA: this came off waay more prickish than it was intended. Hitting 80+mph on back roads is never a good idea. He’s lucky no one else was coming the opposite direction. He also panicked and just sat there when it happened.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:49 |
|
Are you kidding? He was approaching 70 right into that turn with an elevation change.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:49 |

Are you kidding? He was approaching 70 right into that turn with an elevation change. No surprise it let loose to me
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:53 |

At 0:13 there is something in the road; not sure if that had anything to do with losing it.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:53 |

This video comes to mind.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:55 |
|
Exactly.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:55 |
|
Yup, took a look at the video and this is what happened. Once he lost traction he was just a passenger.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:55 |
|
He broke too much? huh?
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:57 |
|
He was last heard telling the paramedics to apply his S2000’s bumper stickers to the ambulance for an extra 10hp (but only from 7,600 - 7,900 RPM)
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:58 |
|
Convertibles are fine if you don’t drive like an asshole.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:04 |
|
this is exactly how Farrah drives his one takes tho
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:05 |
|
This is what happens when your doing engineering and reading Oppo. You mix up brake and break. I just looked and I wrote the Braking strength in the report instead of breaking.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:05 |
|
Going to need a bigger jump box
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:06 |
|
Looked weird to me too but then again I’ve never driven a S2000 so I don’t know how the rear end reacts to throttle lift.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:06 |
|
This is why you always leave a buffer on mountain roads.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:07 |
|
There’s someting off with the audo track towards the end of that one, too.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:08 |
|
You mean the swagtastic dubstep?
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:08 |
|
Yup been there. I lost control of my sister in law’s Forester on an icy road last winter. All I could do was mash the breaks and counter steer a bit. I was telling myself I need to get off the breaks to stop the spin, but I couldn’t move. Luckily we just slid into the ditch and nothing/no one was hurt.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:11 |
|
Yeah that’s what I saw, dude took that turn about 30 mph too fast.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:13 |
|
He braked way too hard going from 80-70 mph on a downhill, sending weight forward and loading the front tires up with traction and lightening the rear tires.
I absolutely hate spirited driving on the road like canyon carving and finding curvy roads. It proves nothing. Lanes limit the driver to one side of the road.
edit: something is indeed on the road. Look under the...whatever that character wearing sunglasses is. Could be anything.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:15 |

Oh, that noise was intentional???
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:15 |

Ow, geez. The photo link wasn’t posted yet when I watched this yesterday. RIP car, best wishes for a complete recovery driver! My back hurts just looking at those.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:16 |
|
True but recreate the exact same crash with a Scion FRS and I’m sure the outcome would’ve been WAY different. And the driver would of probably walked away.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:17 |

I don’t think I’d trust the speedo in that shot. No traction and traveling mostly sideways means that the wheel speed is going to be pretty much entirely unrelated to actual velocity.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:17 |
|
Matt Farah drives like an asshole too, but does he do it on a closed road?
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:18 |
|
Yeah, if your headed downhill on a tight mountain road and lift off from 80 to 70 your goina have a bad time.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:18 |
|
Yes, if you drive like an asshole make sure you’re in a cage.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:22 |
|
As he was hitting the ditch, I saw that plastic bag float up from the passenger seat. I could’ve sworn it was a rabbit at first...
Please, folks, this is why you put your rabbits in a seat belt.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:22 |

Needs more oppo.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:22 |
|
One of the YouTube commenters claims he saw something in the road. I haven’t gone back to scrutinize yet. I agree it looks weird.
He had already started his turn before the item, and didn’t lose control until afterwards.
You decide if it was a factor or not. Maybe he was looking at it instead of the road?
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:22 |
|
Also he probably lifted off during that weak counter steer, causeing the forces to have their way with him despite steering input.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:22 |
|
He did not even react to it, as in he did not realize what was happening.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:24 |
|
when in doubt, flat out...
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:26 |
|
No most of the time he does it on open public roads, with cyclists on them .
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:26 |
|
If you watch his speedo he went from 80-70 right as he went into the corner. I think he ended up breaking too much while turning and just stuffed it. Also he never tried to recover from the skid and steered way to straight, lack off oppo lead to serious owch factor.
You can say that again, look at the
photos of the car afterwards..
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:27 |
|
I actually never thought of that. You might be onto something.
at most the car was travelling 60mph since he spun out at 70 and would of slowed down a bit before hitting the ditch.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:28 |
|
Yeah, it looks like this is the first time he has ever lost traction while driving. As soon as the rear breaks loose, he just freezes up. This is the main reason I do a local drifting event about once every six months. Just bring my daily and make sure I still know what to do when it goes sideways.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:29 |
|
If he’s in an AP1 especially.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:32 |
|
I love that the shifter is missing after the crash
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:34 |
|
Seems like a “lift” situation more than over breaking. Either way, way too hot for that turn.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:35 |
|
What scares me is how badly the windshield frame held up over the driver. He is lucky to be alive, look how crushed the seat is.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:40 |
|
That’s not cool.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:43 |
|
I used to drive a worked automatic car, (worked as in full suspension, ohlins, best of the best etc.) and now I drive a manual, and the autotragic was a cake walk to drive abusively around turns etc, the manual scares the shit out of me, the way the car handles on and off the throttle is crazy, and what gear your in will change things just as dramatically.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:46 |
|
This could be the TLDR version of this video
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:52 |
|
He didn’t even Oppo
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:53 |
|
pretty much this. That was not calm, that was nothing at all. Frozen.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:57 |
|
He literally drives those roads almost every single day, though. He knows every bump, crest, and potential hazard that could come up.
Not defending the practice of speeding in public, but that's why he can avoid stuffing it like this guy.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 13:00 |
|
It's really bad isn't it? I've seen Miatas in the same style crash be in a lit better shape. Of course, there are so many variables in play it's hard to tell if it's really unsafe.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 13:08 |
|
I dumped by bike at Summit Point a few years ago (only things broken were the bike and my pride). It was a turn I had already taken dozens of times but this time I came in a little too fast, and a little too wide. Entry speed was 50 and I was doing maybe 55 at most, and I was about 2 feet to the right of my line. I jammed that SOB down until pegs were on pavement but it just sucked me wide and off into the grass. So it really does not take much to screw up.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 13:17 |
|
It’s hard to tell whether the camera mount is really loose, or if the suspension is crazy stiff, or both. The way it loses grip so slowly around a not-that-tight-turn makes me wonder if this car was stanced.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 13:57 |
|
Other than going too fast, there seems to be something in the road before he looses control. Always drive up and down the road normally before hooning. You can spot debris and hidden cops :)

Popup roll bars, a much stronger A-Pillar/cowl, and general Volvo-ness makes a world of difference.

![]() 11/13/2015 at 14:39 |
|
Note to self, put a roll bar in my Miata!! Also, don’t drive stupid. That one might be more important.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 14:46 |
|
Is that speedo in KPH? It really looks way more like ~50mph range which is the conversion. 80 MPH is absurd for going into that turn but 50 is a lot more reasonable. Either way, I much more expected overcorrection rather than not even trying. Almost no oppo, he could have at least went into the ditch straight to avoid rollover.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 14:57 |
|
Yeah, around here I’d be more worried about roll-bar braining from a rear-ender than about rolling the car.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 15:01 |
|
That sucks, best wishes to his recovery.
Hopefully he quits this “spirited” driving garbage and finds a racetrack when he drives again.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 15:03 |
|
Bullshit Bro, we know Subaru’s can’t lose grip in the snow bro.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 15:28 |
|
That is probably the biggest reason why I haven’t bought one yet. And I have followed different discussions around the web on it without getting any solid answer. Obviously if I want to track my car some day, I will need a roll bar. But otherwise, it may not be worth it for a primarily street-driven car.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 15:35 |
|
Seems like he forgot he was doing something dangerous and didnt have a plan for when things went wrong. It looked like he braked sharply down from 80 to 72ish (or lifted)then turned sharply into the corner. Thought for a second maybe he didnt try to countersteer but looks like he did and his hand hit his leg then he rode it out because he couldnt figure out what to do next. He stared into the ditch, he went into the ditch. As a tall guy who has an ap1 I have to wear specific shoes to be able to use the pedals properly and fit my hands between my legs and the steering wheel so I dont have to buy a new seat or modify the factory seat. If I come off as an asshole its not intentional.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 15:50 |

No assholery detected.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 16:29 |

More proof that the AP1 will murder you if you have anything less than a laser focus while driving.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 16:52 |
|
I need a rollbar.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 16:59 |

That’s the road out to Canyon Lake, by where I used to live in AZ! Super fun road to drive on, you just have to be smart about it.

Score another point for the FR-S!
![]() 11/13/2015 at 17:23 |

Any after pictures of the car? The S2000’s A-Pillars are supposed to be super strong.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 17:24 |

It’s an AP2.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 17:32 |

Well, they’re almost as bad.

hahaha, they can with bed tires.

Damn! Even the roll hoop bent. He’s lucky to be alive....
![]() 11/15/2015 at 08:12 |

I see that one of the tires is “Westlake,” which are apparently crap.
![]() 11/15/2015 at 09:05 |

They are some of the worst tires one could buy. They certainly don’t belong on a sports car. If he had decent tires he may not of lost control in the first place.
